ORCHARD PARK – There were no network shenanigans in the form of flex scheduling this week regarding the Buffalo Bills, so their game Sunday against the New York Jets remains fixed in its original 1 p.m. window on CBS, to which many Bills are probably chanting, Hallelujah.
This will be just the sixth early window kickoff of the season, and the first since Nov. 10 when Buffalo played at Indianapolis.
And because it’s such an unattractive slate of 1 p.m. games on CBS, the network’s top broadcast team of Jim Nantz, Tony Romo and Tracy Wolfson will be at Highmark Stadium, even though the Bills are eight games ahead of the Jets in the AFC East.
The reason for this is simple: Four AFC teams who have already clinched playoff berths – Chiefs, Steelers, Ravens, Texans – played Christmas Day in the Netflix doubleheader, and two other teams who are near locks to clinch berths – Chargers and Broncos – are playing Saturday night.
Given the other two wholly awful 1 p.m. options – Titans at Jaguars or Panthers at Buccaneers – it was an easy decision to send the A team to call Josh Allen vs. Aaron Rodgers.
On the surface, one might expect a non-competitive game given that the 4-11 Jets are playing out the string on a wildly disappointing and dysfunctional season while the 12-3 Bills have already clinched the AFC East and are in great position to lock down the No. 2 seed.
However, that was the thought last Sunday against the New England Patriots before the Bills fell into a 14-0 hole and were fortunate to come away with a 24-21 victory. The Jets may be a mess, but they have a better roster than the Patriots, so this is probably not a day where the Bills can sleep walk their way to victory.
Allen said that the Bills had a relatively vanilla game plan against the Patriots for the purpose of not showing off too much ahead of the postseason. But until the No. 2 seed is locked up, the Bills might want to avoid doing that against a Jets team that always gives them problems, case in point in Week 6 when Buffalo escaped with a hard-fought 23-20 victory.
“We’re trying to also be smart, right, with some of the things we do,” coach Sean McDermott admitted. “That said, you’re also trying to play really high level football with what we did go into the game plan with as well. So, I could see why he was saying some of that. Beyond that, what’s important for us is we take what we do have and we execute at a high level.”
