Week 16 Chiefs recap: Kansas City Chiefs take down Texans

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs picked up a dominant win in their week 16 matchup with the Houston Texans.

They’ll move on to Pittsburgh now, looking to pick up the 1-seed and a first-round bye just four days from now on Christmas Day.

Here’s how the Chief’s week 16 win went down:

First Quarter

Jaden Hicks picked off Texan’s QB CJ Stroud on Houston’s opening drive after Stroud overthrew WR Nico Collins.

Following the interception, Mahomes drove the ball down the field with multiple 10+ yard runs, capping the drive off by barreling over a few Texans for a rushing touchdown. Houston responded with a field goal, putting the score at 7-3.

Mahomes, who has been sacked more this season than any other in his career, was put down by the Texans following their field goal, forcing the Chiefs into a third and long which they failed to convert.

The first quarter came to a close with the Chiefs leading 7-3.

Second Quarter

Houston got the second quarter rolling with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Stroud to a wide-open TE Dalton Schultz.

The Chiefs got the ball back, scoring a touchdown on a three-yard run from RB Kareem Hunt after a roughing the passer call. The Chiefs drove the ball 82 yards to regain the lead. The Chiefs were back up 14-10.

Trent McDuffie got his second interception in two weeks after Hunt’s TD run. Stroud forced a ball under pressure and McDuffie took advantage.

Set to get the ball after halftime, the Chiefs scored again before the break on a Butker field goal. Chiefs led 17-10 at the half with 10 unanswered points.

Third Quarter

The Chiefs got the ball to start the second half but were forced to punt it back to Houston.

The Texans took advantage, with CJ Stround dropping a 30-yard dime to WR Tank, who was gruesomely injured on the play. Dell was taken off the field on a stretcher, with what appeared to be a very serious, season-ending injury.

Texans K Ka’imi Fairbairn resonated the emotions of the shaken-up Texans by whiffing the extra point after Dell’s touchdown. Texans clawed by to 16-17 after the score.

The Chiefs didn’t waste any time getting a solid lead back, with Mahomes finding Xavier Worthy for another TD. Worthy totaled 46 scrimmage yards on the scoring drive.

Fourth Quarter

The Texans wouldn’t give up without at least some fight, getting back in field goal range for Fairbairn to redeem himself with a field goal, Chiefs still up 24-19.

The Chiefs kept chugging, almost scoring another TD, but a WR miscommunication on a pass intended for Kelce forced the Chiefs into a field goal.

After a lackluster three-and-out, the Texans needed a solid stop to win, but Kareem Hunt sealed the win for the Chiefs.
