Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is reportedly making a play to reunite with his former Denver Broncos standout, safety Justin Simmons, as the team looks to shore up its secondary. Sources close to the organization say Fangio has personally contacted the unrestricted free agent to pitch a move to Philly, aiming to replace the departed C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

Simmons, 31, thrived under Fangio’s system in Denver from 2019 to 2021, racking up 14 interceptions and earning two All-Pro nods. Now, after a solid 2024 stint with the Atlanta Falcons—where he posted 62 tackles and 2 picks—the veteran safety is on the Eagles’ radar following Gardner-Johnson’s trade to the Houston Texans earlier this week.

“Vic knows Justin’s a perfect fit,” an insider told ESPN. “He’s pushing hard to bring him in.” With Reed Blankenship as the lone proven starter and Sydney Brown still recovering from an ACL tear, Simmons’ experience and familiarity with Fangio’s two-high scheme could stabilize a secondary that ranked second in takeaways last season.

The Eagles, flush with $22 million in cap space per OverTheCap, could offer Simmons a one-year deal in the $8-10 million range—mirroring his 2024 Falcons contract—without breaking the bank. Simmons hinted at the possibility on his Talkin’ Ball podcast Tuesday, calling a reunion with Fangio and DB coach Christian Parker “a top priority.”

Fresh off a Super Bowl LIX title, Philly’s not standing pat. If Fangio gets his way, Simmons could be the next piece in their bid to stay atop the NFL.
