According to multiple sources, including an Eagles teammate, star wide receiver A.J. Brown has become very frustrated with Jalen Hurts and the Eagles’ passing game. If Brown forces his way out of Philadelphia, the New England Patriots will make a blockbuster move to acquire the three-time Pro Bowler.
Patriots’ Receiver Core Needs Help
Drake Maye is looking increasingly like the Patriots’ next franchise QB. With the limited help around him, he has been playing very solid for a rookie, racking up nearly 1700 passing yards, 11 TDs, and a 67% completion rate over eight career starts.
The Patriots receiving core is easily the worst in football. However, there is a lot of potential for the upcoming years. Besides Kendrick Bourne and the reliable TE Hunter Henry, their wide-receiving core is very young. DeMario Douglas (2nd leading receiver, 497 yards) and Kayshon Boutte (4th leading receiver, 330 yards) are a pair of 6th-round picks from the 2023 draft that both show potential on the field.
The Patriots also drafted a set of wide receivers in the 2024 NFL draft, The drafted Ja’Lynn Polk in the 2nd round and Javon Baker in the 4th round, both high-upside picks. Not to mention they have their 2022 2nd-round pick, Tyquan Thornton as well. All of these young, high-upside players need a veteran, high-upside receiver to help lead and develop them, which is why the Patriots need to target the disgruntled A.J. Brown this offseason.
A.J. Brown Is A Stud
A.J. Brown automatically boosts any wide receiver room he is put in. This season he has 48 receptions, 836 yards, and 4 TDs through 10 games and is on a down year compared to past seasons. Since entering the league in 2019, Brown has had at least 1,000 receiving yards in every season except one with the Titans where he only played 13 games and still finished with almost 900 yards. Although the Eagles are thriving this year and sit at 2nd in the NFC, the chemistry on offense hasn’t been there. Hurts is 20th in the NFL in passing yards and 14th in passing TDs and while the down year may be because of running back Saquon Barkley’s success, Hurts also hasn’t done what he has needed to do to get the ball to his open receivers.
Brown’s frustrations are understandable, and if he chooses to request a trade the Patriots need to go all in on Brown so they can look elsewhere in the draft.
