Steelers must find a way to extend these cornerstone players in the new year

Pittsburgh would be wise to re-sign some cornerstone pieces before they leave.

As the New Year hits, it is a good time to look ahead to what is to come in the world of the Steelers. Expect many players to get negotiations going between the conclusion of the regular season and when free agency opens in March. There are plenty of talented players who are either pending free agents after the season, or guys who will be pending free agents once 2026 hits.

No matter if they are scheduled to hit free agency this year or not, the Steelers would be wise to find a contract extension with them soon. You will hear plenty of rumors going around this offseason and into training camp for some of these individuals. Pittsburgh must find ways of keeping these players around as they have done plenty of positive things to help make this club successful.

T.J. Watt, EDGE

The obvious one here, but T.J. Watt will be in the rumor mill once again. Hopefully, this contract negotiation will not be as lengthy as last time. Watt is the main part of the Steelers defense, and he should be ready to accept another Defensive Player of the Year nomination. Watt has been nothing but terrific for Pittsburgh, and they will do their best to re-sign him around training camp.

George Pickens, WR

Remember how terrible the Brandon Aiyuk saga was for the 49ers before he re-signed? Well, expect that but more drama with George Pickens at training camp. He has shown plenty of diva qualities throughout his young career, and he will want a big-money extension going into a contract year. The Steelers might be hesitant to sign him, but they have no other choice right now unless they trade him.

Elandon Roberts, LB

He has been a perfect soldier for the Steelers ever since he signed here. We saw him play above his expectations last season when everyone else got injured at his position. Then he sadly also suffered an injury. Elandon Roberts is a tough and gritty linebacker that fans love. He is not afraid to blow up a play with his physicality. Roberts stated he would like to return to Pittsburgh, and the Steelers should oblige.

Russell Wilson, QB

Not everything has been perfect with Russell Wilson as the Steelers starting quarterback, but he has certainly brought back stability. Having a veteran signal-caller has brought a new freshness for fans that they have been missing for a long time. Wilson is on track to get an extension done with Pittsburgh before he hits free agency, which will probably be around two to three years.

Donte Jackson, CB

He has been a great surprise for Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan since being traded to the Steelers. Donte Jackson is having the best season of his career. Pittsburgh has seen plenty of positives since adding Jackson to their lineup. He has shown a ton of grit since he played through different injuries this year. Jackson would be lovely to have back with the Steelers, but they can’t overpay him.
