The Pittsburgh Steelers‘ quarterback situation has been up in the air ever since the end of the 2024 season.
Team president Art Rooney II was clear in saying that the organization would like to re-sign either Russell Wilson or Justin Fields to be the starting quarterback in 2025, but the franchise is strongly leaning towards Fields. The only issue is that Fields is expected to have a fairly strong market in free agency, and the quarterback is going to test the waters on what he can get.
Much of the fan base wants Fields to stay in Pittsburgh, but the quarterback has to do his due diligence when it comes to weighing his options. He is expected to sign with the Steelers or the New York Jets, and signing with New York would reunite him with wide receiver Garrett Wilson.
It is probably fairly enticing to play in a big market like New York under a new regime, which means the Steelers are in danger of losing Fields. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on Monday morning that the quarterback has not even responded to Pittsburgh’s offer.
“They have had an offer out to Justin Fields for several days now,” Pelissero reported.
The insider noted that the quarterback and his team have not responded to the offer as he plans to test the free-agency market. There is also the chance that Fields has a little bit of trust issues when it comes to Pittsburgh, especially after being replaced by Wilson as the starter after beginning the 2024 season 4-2.
Fields was allowed to win the starting job during training camp in 2024, but Wilson was still named the starter ahead of the regular season, despite missing most of August with a calf injury. Fields started in his place throughout the first six games of the year as Wilson reinjured his calf before Week 1, and Wilson took the job over before a Week 7 matchup against the Jets.
The younger quarterback was never given the chance to start after being replaced by Wilson in the middle of the year, even while Wilson was struggling during a season-ending five-game losing streak.
The upside with Fields is limitless due to his athleticism, and it is something the Steelers must find a way to hang onto. All of the competitors in the league have quarterbacks who can improvise and extend plays with their legs, and Fields provides that.
There were moments with Wilson in the backfield where the pocket collapsed and he had no choice but to surrender into a sack. That is a drive killer, and those kinds of plays don’t likely happen with Fields behind center.
Steelers Have Not Been Denied By Justin Fields
Although the Steelers have not heard back from Fields in regards to the offer they extended to his team, that does not mean he is denying the offer. He just wants to see how he is viewed by other teams throughout the league who need a quarterback, as the 2025 season is going to be crucial when it comes to his career as a starting quarterback.
He will be able to speak with other organizations, not only to figure out how much he is worth financially but also to see how these teams see his trajectory. This will give him a better idea of how he needs to approach the rest of his career in the NFL, and it could lead him back to Pittsburgh when it is all said and done.
