PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers leaders seemed nothing short of exasperated around the locker room on Wednesday. After a passionate message from the Ravens’ away locker room, linebacker Patrick Queen, who is also the green dot of the defense, seemed lost for words at times during his press conference on Wednesday.
After saying everyone had to look at themselves in the mirror or get off the ship, the Queen returned to the same message and said nothing was happening. At some point, you can only do your one of 11 and try to fix what is wrong, but if everyone is not doing their job, it becomes a huge issue.
“Can’t explain it, it’s happening. We keep talking about it. Nobody is doing a thing about it. If nobody does anything about what they are supposed to be doing then we don’t have any room for it,” Queen said. ”I don’t know if we have to keep saying it. We have said it the last two or three weeks. It is at a point where you realize it and go out there and play fast and play physical and do your job.”
Queen said he becomes motivated simply by hearing Cam Heyward and T.J. Watt. Heyward noted that it feels like 10 guys are doing their job, but one other person is not. It seems like a subtle shot to someone on the defense across the lakeSteelers’.
“When 10 guys do their job and one guy doesn’t, we are screwed,” Heyward said. “it’s brutal.”
DeShon Elliott was not as charitable as the others. Neither was Alex Highsmith. Highsmith said there is not ‘enough want-to’ in the Steelers’ defense now, which continues to show itself.
“There’s gotta be a want-to, and there’s not enough of that right now. We’ve got (one) game left – we’re gonna find out who wants it. You gotta want it,” Highsmith said.
With some expletives thrown in, Elliott was not at a loss for how to fix things. In fact, he knew exactly what was wrong, but guys just have to do their jobs.
“First off, guys can’t be (expletive) wide open. That’s first: do your job. I feel like we communicated. Guys just weren’t doing their freaking job. Get back to the drawing board. It’s Week 18. Shouldn’t be having these problems in week 18. These are Week 1 or Week 2 problems,” Elliott said.
The Steelers have 10 days to figure out how to fix their issues. It has to be fixed before they head into the playoffs, but if they show up in the postseason playing like this, the Steel
