GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay Packers are making waves off the field, restructuring superstar running back Josh Jacobs’ contract to free up salary cap space, the team confirmed Tuesday. The move gives GM Brian Gutekunst more financial firepower as he eyes a blockbuster draft or free agency splash ahead of the 2025 season.
Jacobs, 27, signed a 4-year, $48 million deal with Green Bay in March 2024, fresh off a stellar debut season that saw him rush for a projected 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2024 (Packers.com). His original $12 million annual average included a $14 million cap hit for 2025, but the Packers have reworked the pact, converting $10 million of his $11 million base salary into a signing bonus, sources told Yahoo Sports. That bonus, spread over the remaining three years (2025-2027) at $3.33 million annually, slashes his 2025 cap hit to $7 million—saving $7 million in cap space this year.
The restructured deal keeps Jacobs’ $48 million total intact through 2027, with the Packers now boasting roughly $47 million in cap room (Over The Cap). “Josh is a cornerstone—we’re thrilled to keep him locked in,” Gutekunst said. The extra cash could fuel a trade-up in the 2025 NFL Draft—set for Lambeau—for a top prospect like Michigan DT Mason Graham or Arizona WR Tetairoa McMillan, filling gaps left by TJ Slaton and Christian Watson’s ACL injury.
Fans on X buzzed: “Jacobs restructure? Genius—now get us a WR!” (@PackFaithful), while @LambeauRealist cheered, “More cap for Gutey to cook!” After losing A.J. Dillon to the Eagles, Jacobs’ 2024 breakout cemented him as RB1, and this move signals Green Bay’s all-in push for a Super Bowl. With Jordan Love’s offense humming, the Packers are betting big—and Jacobs just gave them the chips to play.
