Many people want the San Francisco 49ers to make improving their offensive line their top priority in this coming April’s NFL draft. While Trent Williams is still arguably the league’s best left tackle, he’s 36 years of age, and the only certainty on their offensive line may be starting right guard Dominick Puni, who has turned in a strong rookie year.
However, there is a strong argument to be made for taking the best player available, especially in the first round of the draft. A recent mock draft by The 33rd Team has the Niners taking cornerback Will Johnson from the University of Michigan with the No. 11 pick.
“Johnson has the size, physicality, and ball instincts to be an NFL star,” wrote Kyle Crabbs. “His stature and coverage versatility would go a long way in helping the 49ers have coverage answers for physical wide receivers in the NFC West, such as Puka Nacua, DK Metcalf, and Marvin Harrison Jr. This is a true best player available selection, but it also just so happens to overlap with a looming need.”
While the Niners have two very good young cornerbacks in Deommodore Lenoir and rookie Renardo Green, Charvarius Ward, who made the Pro Bowl and led the league in passes defended last year, will be a free agent this coming offseason. If Johnson truly has star potential, he could ensure that their secondary will be rock solid for years to come.
At 6-foot-2 and 202 pounds, Johnson seems adept in both man and zone coverage, and he can also help stop the opposing team’s running game. He helped Michigan win the national championship last year, and this year, he has two pick-sixes and 14 total tackles (12 solo) in six games, although his last game came on Oct. 19 due to turf toe.
