The Buffalo Bills are one of the best teams and organizations in the NFL. Due to sustained success over the last five years, one key Bills piece could leave Buffalo if Josh Allen and Sean McDermott lead the team to the promised land.
Every team with a terrible record or horrible offense or defense is looking for the next hot new coordinator or former coach to turn their team around. The Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, and New York Jets all fired their head coaches at different points in the 2024 season.
All three teams have too many holes to fill in the off-season. When other teams have success, however, they come looking to raid the pantry of the teams that are flourishing. Buffalo fell into that category over the last five years.
The Bears, Jets, and Saints will be looking for offensive gurus to reinvigorate their offenses. The Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Giants will likely move on from their head coaches. There could also be a surprise firing that no one saw coming.

Detroit’s Ben Johson will be the most sought-after head coaching candidate this off-season. He’s orchestrated one of the league’s most overwhelming offenses over the last few years. He’s already being linked to Chicago.
Jared Goff sits at the top of NFL QBs after being dumped by the Los Angeles Rams for Matthew Stafford. Buffalo’s offensive coordinator Joe Brady could be a great consolation prize for those who miss out on the talented young signal caller.
A Key Bills Piece May Leave Buffalo Following 2024’s Success
Guiding a Superstar to Potential MVP
Brady worked wonders with Allen in a short amount of time. The turnover rate for NFL coordinators in the NFL has been extremely high ever since Sean McVay took the league by storm several years ago with the Rams.
Once Brady replaced Ken Dorsey after a 24-22 loss in Denver on November 13, 2023, he turned Buffalo’s offense into a well-oiled machine. Josh Allen was able to distribute the ball to a multitude of weapons. The running game was featured more, helping the passing attack stay more grounded. The Bills won five of their final six games.

Trading wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans in the offseason took some pressure off of Allen. Instead of feeding most of the targets to one hungry mouth, the MVP candidate simply needed to find the open man. Allen could take off and punish defenders with his large frame if everyone was covered.
Former Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy was long one of the coordinators in line for a head coaching spot. He moved to the collegiate ranks after moving to Washington for a year. With Johnson and Brady calling plays for two of the NFL’s most potent offensive forces, one or both could call a new zip code home in 2025.
Maximizing the Roster
Buffalo finished 11-6 last year but bowed out to Kansas City in the divisional round last year. On the year, Brady and Allen led the offensive to top 10 finishes in three major offensive categories:
- Total Yards Per Game – 6th overall (383.4 ypg)
- Passing Yards Per Game – 10th overall (253.3 ypg)
- Rushing Yards Per Game – 7th overall (130.3 ypg) in 2023
The Bills have already surpassed last year’s win total, sitting at 12-3 through 15 games in 2024. In that time, Buffalo has similar offensive rankings in 2024:
- Total Yards Per Game – 7th overall (366.5 ypg)
- Passing Yards Per Game – 9th overall (230 ypg)
- Rushing yards Per Game – 9th overall (133.5 ypg)
The totals are down a bit from last year but still keep Buffalo in the top 10 of all three categories. Brady helped Allen curtail a lot of the huge mistakes he would make when trying to make too many big plays. Allen had over 30 touchdowns passing in each of the last two seasons but racked up 14 interceptions in 2022 and 18 last year.
He’s only tossed six the other way this season. Because he’s helped ground Allen while also better utilizing his skills, Brady will be a hot commodity in the off-season.
Altering the scheme to maximize the players has made the offense more efficient. It can still bust out for over 400 yards of total offense in a game like in the 40-point shootout with the Lions and Rams.
With so many teams looking for that next hot coordinator to fix their offense, Joe Brady may be in the head coach conversation in 2025. That will only ramp up if Allen takes home his first MVP trophy. He’ll get even more scrutiny if Buffalo finally brings home a Lombardi Trophy in February.
