Reigning Super Bowl champions have also become the third US sports franchise to exceed the 5m mark on TikTok.
The Kansas City Chiefs have become the first National Football League (NFL) team to surpass one million subscribers on YouTube.
Confirmed:
- Chiefs are the second American professional sports team to reach one million subscribers on YouTube, joining the National’s Basketball Association’s (NBA) Golden State Warriors
- Reigning Super Bowl champions have also surpassed five million followers on TikTok
- Team’s social media following now stands at more than 16.3 million across all platforms, the fifth-largest audience in the NFL
Context:
The Chiefs launched their YouTube channel in 2015, but their following grew by more than 50 per cent from August 2024 to December 2024 alone, pushing the franchise past the one million mark. They are also just the third American professional sports team to surpass five million followers on TikTok.
The club’s social media growth can in part be attributed to their success on the field, which has seen them win the last two Super Bowls. The team also boasts some of the biggest stars in the league, namely quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, whose own profile has been boosted by his relationship with pop star Taylor Swift.
Mahomes ranked 36th in SportsPro’s list of the world’s 50 Most Marketable (50MM) athletes in 2024, finishing several places below teammate Kelce, who was 12th.
Comment:
“We are incredibly proud of the continued growth of our digital platforms and social channels, and becoming the first NFL team to hit these milestones is a special accomplishment for our team,” said Lara Krug, executive vice president and chief media and marketing officer for the Chiefs.
“This is a testament to Chiefs Kingdom and how our fans engage with us. A lot of work goes into creating compelling content and maximising how it’s consumed by our fans, and we will continue to look for new and unique ways to reach our audience on YouTube, TikTok and beyond.”
Coming next:
Having lost just one game all season, the Chiefs are already confirmed as the number one seed going into the NFL playoffs, which will represent another opportunity for the franchise to maximise social media engagement.
