The Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback controversy has ebbed and flowed in terms of how volatile he could be. After it looked like Justin Fields had no shot of becoming the starter once again after Russell Wilson’s resurgence, the recent struggles of No. 3 have reignited a small ember of the one-raging fire.
Fields has the stronger arm and more athletic ability, which has made the young former first-round pick a more dynamic option when compared to Wilson. Those who are against Wilson are having a great time watching him struggle against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Wilson completed just four passes in the first half against a Bengals team that came into the game as one of the worst defenses in the NFL, and immediately came out in the second half and went three and out. There has to be a thought in the back of someone’s mind to make the move, right?
Justin Fields talk gets louder as Steelers’ QB Russell Wilson struggles
Fields is likely not going to play again this season, as it would be bordering on unprecedented (shout out Rob Johnson/Doug Flutie) for a team going into the playoffs to make a quarterback change. However, if Wilson is struggling in the moment, Mike Tomlin may not have another choice.
Wilson’s accuracy and ability to reel off big plays has been the main reason he has stayed in the offense over Fields, but if he is unable to stretch the field against a defense of this poor quality, what is he going to do when the calendar flips to January and the defense gets stronger?
Wilson looks like the washed player he was in Denver. On top of the fact he is inviting pressure from a beat-up Bengals defense, Wilson is lacking the Fields X-factor quotient needed to get out of busted plays. This has been a continuance of the last few weeks, which has been more of the same.
Fields may not be in a position to get his starting role back, but Wilson is struggling to the point where someone has to at least think about Fields injecting some sort of spark into the room.
