Pittsburgh, March 07, 2025 – The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a splash ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, announcing that legendary tight end Heath Miller will join the team’s coaching staff in a unique role: serving as a mentor to General Manager Omar Khan in the draft war room. This marks Miller’s first official return to the organization since retiring in 2015, bringing back one of Steelers Nation’s most beloved icons.
Miller, who wore the iconic No. 83 for 11 seasons with Pittsburgh (2005-2015), is no stranger to the franchise’s biggest moments. A first-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft (30th overall), he helped secure two Super Bowl titles (XL and XLIII) and remains the Steelers’ all-time leader among tight ends with 592 receptions, 6,569 receiving yards, and 45 touchdowns. His presence in the draft room is expected to provide invaluable on-field perspective and a keen eye for talent from a player who once navigated the grueling draft process himself.
In his new role, Miller will assist GM Omar Khan in evaluating prospects, particularly at tight end and across the offensive skill positions—areas where he once dominated. “Heath is an integral part of Steelers history. He knows what it takes to be a player who fits this team’s culture,” Khan said during a press conference this morning. “His experience at both the college and NFL levels, combined with his calm demeanor and leadership, will be a tremendous asset as we make critical decisions in the draft.”
The move comes at a pivotal time for the Steelers, who are looking to reshape their roster following a rollercoaster 2024 season, with key positions like quarterback (QB) and running back (RB) in need of reinforcement. Miller previously served as a mentor to young players at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine, so he’s no stranger to guiding and assessing up-and-coming talent. Now, he’ll take on a behind-the-scenes role, working alongside Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin to unearth gems from the draft pool.
Steelers fans couldn’t contain their excitement on social media. One X user posted, “Heath Miller in the draft room? Best news since Big Ben was throwing him TDs in the Super Bowl!” Another chimed in, “If Heath helps us land a new TE or an explosive RB, I’ll be yelling HEEEEATH at Acrisure Stadium again!”
Currently, Miller remains the head coach of the St. Anne’s-Belfield School football team in Virginia, where he’s been leading the program since 2024. However, he’s agreed to carve out time during the draft season to lend his expertise to the Steelers. “Pittsburgh will always be home,” Miller said in a brief statement. “Helping the team find the next generation of talent is a huge honor. I’m looking forward to working with Omar and Mike.”
With the 2025 NFL Draft set for late April, Heath Miller’s addition promises to bring a fresh dynamic to a Steelers organization hungry to reclaim its spot atop the AFC North. Can “Big Heath” work his magic from the war room? Only time will tell.
