Before the 2021 NFL season began, then-Green Bay Packers stars Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams both shared an image of themselves side by side with one of Chicago Bulls legends Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen from the acclaimed documentary “The Last Dance.” The meaning behind the post was clear. 2021 would be the final season that they played together, at least in Packers uniforms.
And what a season it was!
Green Bay won 13 games for the third season in a row on the back on his historic performances from their two best offensive players. Rodgers completed 68.9% of his passes for 4,115 yards, 37 touchdowns, just four interceptions, and an 111.9 passer rating on his way to a second consecutive NFL MVP Award. Adams set single-season franchise records for receptions (123) and receiving yards (1,553) while also catching 11 touchdowns on his way to a second consecutive First Team All-Pro nod.
Unfortunately, the Packers’ run in the NFL Playoffs ended after just one game, a loss at home in the Divisional Round to the San Francisco 49ers.

Following the 2021 season, the Packers put the franchise tag on Adams, who insisted that he would not play under the tag. According to him, Green Bay low-balled him during contract negotiations, so when they did come back with an offer that was competitive, he already felt disrespected enough to ask for a trade. He also knew that Rodgers’ future with the Packers was not clear, whether it be because they would move onto Jordan Love or that the four-time NFL MVP would retire, and he did (he said) want to take a chance playing with an inexperienced quarterback.
So they traded him.
Adams was sent to the Las Vegas Raiders for a first and second round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Of course, Green Bay traded Rodgers to the New York Jets a year later so that they could hand the offense over to Love.
Neither Rodgers nor Adams has had the same amount of success that they experienced together with the Packers.
Davante Adams Eventually Reunited with Aaron Rodgers on the New York Jets New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8) and wide receiver Davante Adams (17) high-five each other as they walks off the field after a 32-25 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars game at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, on Dec. 15, 2024.
Adams had a good first season in Las Vegas, even though the team as a whole did not. He led the NFL in touchdown receptions with 14 while also catching 100 passes for 1,516 yards. However, Derek Carr, his close friend and college quarterback, was sent home from the team early and then released. Since Carr was sent home during the 2022 season, Adams played with five different quarterbacks on the Raiders. The culture of the team was so poor that he demanded a trade earlier this season.
And so he was reunited with Rodgers on the Jets, though not on a team with a better culture. If anything, New York’s culture might be even worse, and the former Packers quarterback is getting a great deal of blame for it.
So much so, in fact, that recent reports state that, unless something drastic changes, the Jets are planning to move on from both Rodgers and Adams after the season ends.

Earlier this season, Adams opened up about his departure from the Packers. While he does not regret leaving, one can tell that he feels like he might be missing out on playing with another star quarterback in Green and Gold.“At the time when I was there [in Green Bay], I hadn’t seen enough [of Love], to say for sure ‘this is what I should do [stay with the Packers],’” Adams said on Maxx Crosby’s podcast.
“In hindsight, like we talked about, the kid [Love] is a f—ing baller, man. I’m so happy for him. I haven’t had the chance to truly sit down and talk with him, but I want to tell him at some point ‘I definitely don’t regret changing [teams], but I’m super proud of what you’ve done. If there was a way I could pull you over here and drag you with me that would have been cool too because we saw what he did at the end of the year [throw 23 touchdowns and only three interceptions in his last 10 games including the playoffs].’”
According to Spotrac, Adams’ market value, should be hit free agency, is two-years and $27.1 million. That is an average of about $13.5 million a year. Green Bay can afford that.
Undoubtedly, there will be changes to the wide receiver room in 2025, and adding a proven top-tier wide receiver who knows the offense such as Adams does may not be the worst idea.
