The Kansas City Chiefs recently saw wide receiver Marquise Brown return to the lineup, and Rashee Rice could be the next player to make a once-unexpected return to the lineup. Following an impressive rookie season where he recorded 79 receptions for 938 yards and seven touchdowns, Rice entered 2024 as the top receiver on the depth chart. With Brown injured and first-round pick Xavier Worthy adjusting to the NFL, Rice became Mahomes’ security blanket in the first month of the season.
Mahomes locked in on Rice early, as the second-round pick recorded 24 receptions for 288 yards and two touchdowns through the season’s first four games. However, he suffered a knee injury in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers, which placed him on the injured reserve. After undergoing reconstructive knee surgery, most believed the SMU product was done for the season.
However, Marquise Brown and Rashee Rice’s latest Instagram posts suggest he could return for the playoffs. On Saturday, Brown posted a picture of the two with a clock emoji, and Rice later reposted the same photo. While this doesn’t officially mean anything, the clock emoji usually means a player is making a comeback, and Brown himself used the same emoji before his return to the lineup.
Hollywood Brown just posted this picture with Rashee Rice on his Instagram. He posted this same ⏰ before he came back. This doesn’t mean what I think it does, right?

Rashee Rice, Marquise Brown Hint At Playoff Return In Social Media Posts
While these posts are encouraging, it’s important to note the Chiefs themselves have not said anything about Rice potentially joining the team down the stretch. He has not been activated from the injured reserve, nor is he practicing with the team. However, this is a situation to monitor. Rice underwent surgery for an LCL injury, which typically has “at least” an 8-12 week recovery timeframe. The wideout underwent surgery on October 14th, which puts the upper limit of that recovery window on January 6th, 2025. The Chiefs have already clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs, which means their first postseason game will occur on either January 18th or January 19th.
Every injury is unique, and the 8-12 week timeframe is just an estimate based on similar ailments and not necessarily specific to Rashee Rice himself. However, if he can return, he could be a massive boost for a team looking to claim their third Super Bowl in as many seasons. After an absurd amount of luck in one-score games artificially inflated their record, the Chiefs are now playing like a 15-1 team. First-round pick Xavier Worthy is finding his form, Brown is back, and new addition DeAndre Hopkins is making himself at home in Kansas City.
Even if he returns, Rashee Rice probably won’t be able to physically handle the same workload he did early in the season. Fortunately, he won’t need to. The recent improved play from the receivers along with the ever-reliable Travis Kelce will allow Rice to play in smaller, situational roles. Much like the 2023 Chiefs, this iteration of the club is hitting their stride at the right time, and nobody wants to face Patrick Mahomes throwing to four dependable weapons.
