Friday is San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy’s 25th birthday, and he is apparently in line for a humongous payday this offseason that will set himself and his family up for many generations.
However, an increasing number of people feel he isn’t worth as much money as it looked like he was just a few months ago. His touchdown percentage, pass completion percentage and passing yards per game are down this season, and it is debatable whether his deficiencies have been exposed or whether the dip in those numbers is more a result of the injuries the Niners have suffered.
David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard pointed out that Purdy ranks very favorably in two statistical categories up to the age of 25: yards per pass attempt and total career passing yards.
Brock Purdy turns 25 today. He has 9,141 passing yards.
Here are some QBs around Purdy on the list of passing yards before Age 25:
Patrick Mahomes: 9,623
Joe Namath: 9,606
Fran Tarkenton: 9,409
Purdy: 9,141
Andrew Luck: 8.566
Ben Roethlisberger: 8,519— David Lombardi (@LombardiHimself) December 27, 2024
On Brock Purdy’s 25th birthday, yards per attempt before Age 25 in NFL history:
1. Purdy: 8.8
2. Patrick Mahomes: 8.5
3. Ben Roethlisberger: 8.3
4. Deshaun Watson: 8.1
5. Dan Marino: 8.0— David Lombardi (@LombardiHimself) December 27, 2024
It may be hard to argue these days that Purdy is an elite NFL quarterback. However, Patrick Mahomes stats have been only marginally better than Purdy’s stats this season, and Mahomes is still considered, at least in a vacuum, the game’s best signal-caller.
A more stable season in 2025 as far as health and one or two more reinforcements on offense, especially on the offensive line, could result in an excellent year for Purdy much like the one he had in 2023.
