The Baltimore Ravens will likely be missing their superstar quarterback, Lamar Jackson, in Saturday night’s AFC Wild Card playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Jackson, the heart and soul of the Ravens’ offense, has been dealing with a lingering knee injury that he aggravated during the team’s regular-season finale. The incident occurred as Jackson scrambled out of the pocket, trying to make a big play with his legs, a hallmark of his dynamic style.
While the injury is not as severe as initially feared, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported on Wednesday that Jackson is unlikely to suit up for the opening round of the playoffs.
“Lamar Jackson, the MVP quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, is viewed as a long shot to play this weekend,” Rapoport said. “He didn’t practice yesterday and remains pretty sore. He’s been consulting multiple doctors about his knee sprain. It’s the playoffs, so nothing’s ever ruled out, but realistically, it seems doubtful he’ll be ready in time.”
Rapoport added that Jackson could return for the Divisional Round if the Ravens beat the Steelers and advance further in the playoffs.
Jackson has been pivotal to the Ravens’ success this season. Despite missing some games, the former league MVP threw for over 3,200 yards, rushed for 700+ yards, and accounted for 28 total touchdowns. His dual-threat ability is unmatched, and his absence will undoubtedly force the Ravens to lean heavily on their running game and backup quarterback.
Even without Jackson, the Ravens enter the game as favorites against Pittsburgh. However, fans will remember that Jackson accounted for 3 total touchdowns in a dominant 34-17 win over the Steelers earlier in the season. His leadership and playmaking will be sorely missed in what promises to be a high-stakes matchup.
If Baltimore advances, Jackson’s return could provide a massive boost in their quest for postseason success. For now, the Ravens will need to find a way to win without their star.
