Former Player Believes Steelers Should Move On From Russell Wilson

The Pittsburgh Steelers knew that they needed to revamp the quarterback position to be true contenders again.

They did so by getting two players with a big chip on their shoulders and a lot to prove.

One was most likely approaching the sunset of his career, whereas the other should be heading toward his prime.

Despite Justin Fields’ solid showings at the start of the season, head coach Mike Tomlin decided to roll with Russell Wilson once the veteran got healthy.

Now, former NFL MVP Cam Newton believes they should switch back in the offseason and move on from Wilson.

“You bring back Justin Fields, though, and you develop him the right way,” Newton said, via Steelers Depot.

Newton went as far as to say that if properly developed and given a chance to play his brand of football, Fields could be a player like Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson.

The former Carolina Panthers star knows more about the quarterback position than most people, but that still sounds like a bit of a stretch.

Granted, plenty of Fields’ struggles with the Chicago Bears weren’t all his fault, as we’ve seen with other players in the past and now with Caleb Williams.

But Fields hasn’t consistently shown the impressive talent he showed during his days at Ohio State.

However, Newton does have a valid point regarding Fields’ age (25 years old).

So, if the Steelers flame out in the wild-card round again, they will have to consider many more decisions in the offseason.
