As was the case in 2024, the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to have a major question mark at the wide receiver position in 2025. And, depending on what happens with George Pickens and his contract situation, they could have a few.

Let’s stick with the non-Pickens question mark: Pittsburgh is going to need to add another wide receiver on the boundary next offseason. Mike Williams and Van Jefferson will both be free agents, and neither are ideal long-term solutions to begin with.

With that in mind, Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay thinks the Steelers will make a run at Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins in free agency.

Higgins could be the player this Steelers passing attack has sorely needed in recent years. The team ranks a meager 23rd in passing right now and hasn’t finished better than No. 15 in that category since the 2018 campaign. While there’s upside with George Pickens out wide and Russell Wilson under center, No. 2 wideout Calvin Austin III has just 42 catches for 387 yards in 13 contests this season—a far cry from the 581 yards on 45 catches Higgins has put up in five fewer appearances.

The biggest concern with Higgins is his injury history. The star wideout, who is on a $21.8 million franchise tag this year, missed five games in 2023, and another five in 2024. However, that could also help bring his price down in free agency.

Putting the injury concerns aside, there is no question Higgins is a very talented player who would be a massive upgrade for the Steelers, and his departure from Cincinnati would hurt a division rival in the process.

Higgins can do it all on the football field and would be a fantastic running mate for Pickens — and a potential replacement if Pickens and the Steelers can’t get a long-term extension done at some point.

When you consider age and talent, Higgins is set to be the best free-agent wideout on the market in 2025, so he’s going to command plenty of interest and that will likely drive up the price.

The Steelers will be fairly well-equipped to make a play for Higgins, with the team projected to have $53.9 million in cap space in 2025, per Over the Cap. If the price isn’t outlandish, the Steelers absolutely should make a play for Higgins.
