The Kansas City Chiefs moved to 12-1 on the season after a 19-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, and in doing so, clinched the AFC West…again.
As we have become accustomed to this season, the Chiefs’ performance was hardly swashbuckling, but as they do, the offense or defense does enough to secure the win.
Now that one of the team’s goals has been achieved, it’s time to focus on the rest of the regular season and the Super Bowl. However, head coach Andy Reid wanted to make a point that while the Chiefs clinched the division, it isn’t all down to the players.
It’s an organizational achievement.
“I’m proud of the guys, coaches, Clark [Hunt, owner] gives us an opportunity to do this along with Mark Donovan [president] and Brett Veach [general manager],” Reid said. “So we’re all in this together, trying to make this happen. It’s not an easy thing and every year is a little bit different on how we’ve gotten there. But I’m proud of our guys for just hanging in there, we have so many tight games, more so than some of these other years, and so the guys keep hanging in there and feeling like good things are going to happen and keep battling.”
With 10 of their 12 wins this season being by one score, the Chiefs seem to have mastered the art of the close finish.
Patrick Mahomes stated that these close wins prepare the team for the inevitable close and tense finishes that happen in the postseason, and whoever is tasked with halting the Chiefs knows that it will take something a little extra to slay them.
But before we get to that point in the season, there are still four regular-season games left, and the Chiefs will continue “battling” to give themselves the best chance at claiming the AFC’s No. 1 seed.
And we have a feeling it’s only a matter of time before they do that, too.
