49ers’ Charvarius Ward Ruled Out of Lions Matchup Due to Personal Reason

The San Fransisco 49ers will be without a key defender in its NFC Championship game rematch on Monday

Charvarius Ward will not suit up for the San Fransisco 49ers against the Detroit Lions for personal reasons, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

#49ers CB Charvarius Ward (personal) has been downgraded to out on Monday night vs. the #Lions,” Rapoport said.

Ward was first listed on the injury report Saturday after missing practice due to a personal matter. Head coach Kyle Shanahan suggested that the reason for Ward’s absence is positive rather than negative, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

“Yeah. Stuff I can’t totally share,” said Shanahan. “I haven’t talked to him about it, so we’ll keep it personal. But, nothing bad happened.”

In his absence, Isaac Yiadom and Renardo Green are candidates to step in as starters on Monday.

According to Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area, the reasoning for Ward’s recent absence is that he and his family are expecting a baby boy.

This year has been especially challenging for Ward, as he and his family mourn the loss of their daughter, Amani Joy, who passed away on Oct. 28, just shy of her second birthday. Ward, 28, missed four games while grieving her death.

Set to become an unrestricted free agent in the 2025 offseason, his availability for the 49ers’ final regular-season game next week against the Arizona Cardinals remains uncertain.

In other 49ers player status news, right tackle Colton McKivitz is listed as questionable after missing Friday and Saturday’s practices with a knee injury, along with linebacker Tatum Bethune (knee) and safety Ji’Ayir Brown (ankle).

Fullback Kyle Juszczyk returned to practice on Saturday after sitting out Friday due to an illness.

Defensive end Leonard Floyd (shoulder) and running back Isaac Guerendo (foot/hamstring) practiced in full on Saturday after being limited earlier in the week.

“Yeah, it was good to have him back. We had a full-speed practice yesterday, and he looked good. So, no holdbacks, he’s good to go,” said Shanahan about Guerendo.

The Lions are still competing for the NFC North title tied with the Minnesota Vikings at 13-2 with the Green Bay Packers only two games behind.
